Damián Ortega: The End of Matter

Damián Ortega (b. 1967, Mexico) works with several media, discussing the limits of artistic creation when he subverts the meanings and functions of everyday objects, like bricks, chairs or cars. In parallel, he develops an investigation about fundamental sculptural forms, like the minimalistic cube constructed with banal material or deconstructed and misshapen.

Curated by Luiz Camillo Osorio, the show will present a major new installation in MAM’s monumental hall. A big Styrofoam cube of more or less six meters will be transformed during the exhibition period by a group of anonymous Brazilian sculptors that originally work for Carnaval. Every day they’ll remove piece of the cube to create sculptures, which, together, will be a sort of inventory of sculpture.
