David Batchelor: Glowsticks
Galeria Leme presents Glowsticks, the fourth solo exhibition at the gallery by the London-based artist David Batchelor.
For over two decades David Batchelor has been making two and three-dimensional works that explore the vivid colours of the modern city.
This new group of works derives directly from Batchelor’s seminal work Magic Hour (2004-07), which since 2013 has been touring New Zealand, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and Chile as part of the Hayward Gallery’s ground-breaking exhibition Light Show.
As with Magic Hour, and the Backlights that were shown in Galeria Leme in 2010, the source of the works colour is not directly visible. Rather the colour emerges around the edges of a dark silhouetted form and spills onto the surrounding wall. In this new group of works the supporting structure is made from an irregular group of overlapping open frames within which are set ten different LED light circuits. Each frame is programmed to emit a single colour light, and each work combines ten different colours that interact and blend to produce a multicolour spectrum of subtly merging colours.
