Elaine Pessoa: Sandy Time

Meantime, overlaps and gaps are some of the keys to understanding the work presented by the artist Elaine Person in his first solo exhibition at Zipper Galeria. Curated by researcher and anthropologist Georgia Quintas, the show “Sandy Time” brings together ten analog photographs taken in the River Plate region, in Montevideo, where she developed a survey between 2013 and 2014. The series of photographs includes the photobook published by Olhavê, which bears the same title, and was winner of the Kernel Award (s) last year, in photograph publication category, and named one of the best of the year in the edition 2015 PhotoEspaña.

Using an image overlay technique done in a short time, Elaine of this resource to reflect on the concept of temporality that breaks the linear measurement. Inspired by a certain melancholy stillness of the river, the artist also discusses how this temporality relates to photography.

“It is a photo essay that seeks to translate a concept of anachronistic time. Through a photographic narrative inspired by Henri Bergson and Mario Benedetti, “Sandy Time” tells how people relate to the Rio de la Plata, a river that hardly runs, it seems sea and you might want to be a lake. A river that is no longer the river experiences accumulation of those that flow into them, “says the artist.

Sand, suggested by the exhibition’s title, it also shows almost physically present in their series. The grain is not only a representation, but appears as an element within the photograph, a texture of what you see.

The individual will also reveal an interest Elaine by the particularities of the details, it is a torn net, a statue made of shell and wire that appears in the sky. Just as overlays, these cuts create, she said, another look at the space, this can and should be reframed.
