Elisa Bracher (b. 1965, São Paulo) is known for her large sculptures, scattered among a variety of public spaces, and is engaged in artistic work that extends into four different media – drawing, printmaking, sculpture and photography – which do not occur independently of one another, but rather, are interwoven in her poetics. In Luctus Lutum (Latin for “Mourning and Mud”), the artist presents new works in several media, her technical versatility when creating a unified poetics can be accessible to the public.

“Labirinto” [Labyrinth] occupies the ground floor of the gallery. Made of adobe and weighing 30 tons, the work represents the path of mourning. Installed on the second floor, the sculpture “Pulmão” [Lung] consists of two inflatables parts that are connect to each other and “breathe”. The piece was created in the last 15 days of the life of Elisa’s mother, who died at the beginning of this year. “The day after my mother died, I realized that, unconsciously, I had created a lung,” the artist recounts. The sculpture was originally made for the set design of the feature film “Pendular,” by director Julia Murad.

The third work consists of 100 x 50cm photos of the Arctic taken by the artist in 2014, when she took part in the residency project, “Arctic Circle.” The photos are display along with a study for the symphonic poem “Campo dos Sinos” [In the Field of the Bells], a composition by Rodrigo Felicíssimo and Elisa Bracher, which plays in the background.
