Equipe 3 & Arte/Ação
Equipe 3 and Arte/Ação are considered by many critics and curators the undisputed pioneers of ephemeral conceptual art in Brazil. The groups’ highly experimental projects and interventions in the 1970s were forerunners of what later became known as site-specific works.
Galeria Jaqueline Martins proudly exhibits works and documentation by the two art collectives at the gallery itself and at the Solar da Marquesa in the center of the city, in partnership with the Museu da Cidade de São Paulo.
Also known as Group 3, Equipe 3 was established in 1971 by Francisco Iñarra, Lydia Okamura, and Genilson Soares. The three artists worked together until 1974, when Okumura moved to New York, leaving Iñarra and Soares to continue the collaboration until 1979 as Arte/Ação (Art/Action).
The exhibition include photographic documentation of the first mountings of the installations, providing an historical context for the works and reinforcing Equipe 3 and Arte/Ação‘s pioneering use of such installation photography in Brazil as artistic manifestations in their own right. Organized to mark the occasion of the 31st International Biennial of São Paulo, the exhibition, mounted in two very different physical spaces – Galeria Jaqueline Martins and Galeria Solar da Marquesa – provide an opportunity to assess the continuing visual and artistic relevance of the works.
