Falves Silva: Signals
Superfície Gallery presents the solo exhibition of Falves Silva, poet and visual artist, part of the vanguard movement Poem/Process.
In his first solo exhibition at the gallery, artist Falves Silva presents a series of works made between 1974 and 2000, inspired by a text of poet Decio Pignatari [1927-2012] that referred to signals of a new language. Falves appropriates the title to create these colorful collages on paper card where there is a very strong mathematical and geometric rationality. In horizontal and vertical structures, such as buildings found in all big cities, Falves shows of a futuristic writing, where the alphabet of linear writing gives way to new signals, a new non-verbal proposal, such as traffic codes,
The artist believes that this is the main characteristic of this century´s writing, where the images overlap the words in referring to Peirce’s concept of an exclusively semiotic writing. We may think that this would be a hermetic language, but perhaps as Falves shows us, this hermetic writing is part of the human repertoire, thus created with the purpose of alerting the reader-producer- consumer in the search for discovery of new significant / meanings.
