Fernando Otero: Estruturas Precárias

Estruturas Precárias [Precarious Structures] comprises twelve works by Peruvian artist Fernando Otero (b. 1972, Vigo, Spain): paintings, sculptures and assemblages that define a memory, the matter from where the artist’s creations begin.

According to the curator of the show Paulo Gallina, the exhibition “was designed to speculate about the measure of all things”. Thus, Otero’s precarious sculptures are made of objects from the technical universe of an engineer, like rulers and meters, devices that belong to a recent yet outdated time, conjugated to elements of his own universe. His assemblages, by their turn, are created with objects collected by the artist, and conjugate the affective value of the past and the plastic presence of everything we see.

Fernando Otero’s production is marked by the use of architecture and collected elements as raw material for artistic production. By displacing and rearranging familiar objects, he aims to trigger a reflection about our feelings towards familiar objects and their usual places in space. Value, memory and feeling are important issues for his work, which comprehends painting, sculpture and installation. He presented his first solo show in Lima, in 2004, and ever since has had exhibitions in several countries, like Venezuela and England, and participated in several group shows and art fairs. He was awarded the first prize of the Premio al Diseño (PADIS), in Lima, 2008.
