Fernando Vilela: O Mar Que Atravessamos
Fernando Vilela – already known for merging graphical languages such as woodcut and large format photography, and installations that play with the ambiguity of space – in this exhibition brings photographic essays and graphic narratives about memory.
According to the photographer, personal traces are reflected in these works, someone who was born and raised in a family engaged in the struggle against dictatorship in Brazil. The exhibition brings together 35 photographs, artist books, iron objects and designs that combine photos and prints on paper.
In ‘Night’ series, the darkness of night and ink – black smoke on cotton paper – refers to black dense velvety of engraving. ‘Celeste’ series, on the opposite wall, creates a counterpoint gathering 25 photographs of clouds, smoke, explosions and skies of paintings.
The temporal and spatial elements present in the title of these images create a dialogue with another series of works exhibited in the second room of the gallery. In this next room, a wall comprises several bookshelves iron oxidized. Some of them are torn, others permanently sealed or open. On another wall, the images which mix photographs and prints construct visual narratives, like fragments of a graphic (or biographical) novel.
