Joseph Beuys at Bergamin & Gomide

First gallery exhibition in São Paulo for German artist Joseph Beuys, at Bergamin & Gomide. 2016 marks the 30-year anniversary of the death of Beuys, considered one of the most influential artists of the second half of the 20th century. Among the myths surrounding him are his famous works with animal fat and felt.

“To make people free is the aim of art, therefore art for me is the science of freedom.” This phrase belongs to German artist Joseph Beuys, who will have his work on display for the first time in a gallery in São Paulo, at Bergamin & Gomide, in Jardins, São Paulo, as of March 17th. About 35 works will be on display by the theoretician and performer considered to be one of the most influential artists of the second half of the 20th century.

Collecting works since last year, along with additional loans from private collections, the gallery presents a selection of works made between the 1950s and the 1980s in various formats and media. There are sculptures, drawings, prints and videos such as “La Rivoluzione siamo Noi”, 1971, “Vitex Agnus Castus”, 1972, “I like America and America likes me”, 1974, “Beuys by Warhol”, 1980, “Terremoto in Palazzo”, 1982, “Diagramma Terremoto”, 1982-1997, “Palazzo Regale”, 1985, in addition to the classic “Felt Suit”, 1970 and “Capri-Batterie”, 1985.

“We believe that this exhibition will achieve the aim of introducing the work of this remarkable and complete artist to the public of São Paulo. His work influenced a generation of great Brazilian artists such as Antonio Dias, Cildo Meireles and Artur Barrio, and continues to provoke the current generation with the same intensity”, says Thiago Gomide, one of the Gallery’s partners.
