Martinho Patrício
Galeria Superficie presents the first solo exhibition of the artist Martinho Patrício (Joao Pessoa, Brazil, 1964) in Sao Paulo.
With a peculiar work – usually in tissue – develops concepts related to time, the religion, the sacred and the profane, the death, the deformation of worship and ritual objects. At the same time, it deals with issues related to the popular imagination, contrasting rustic materials textures linked to Northeastern traditions in order to establish dialogue between them. The use of fabric as works of support is anchored in strong references of the artist’s daily life, from early surrounded by a varied repertoire of liturgical and playful shapes made of wit and cloth. While they are near the educated constructive ways, these other forms of Martinho’s works are not fixed or stiff, giving the breath of the wind and the proximity of the human body. The procedure proposed by the artist combines his interest in fashion (so far achieved by fabrics, ribbons, yoyos, lace and their cerziduras) the configuration of spontaneity of a game like the shells.
The artist participated in 2006, the 27th. Biennial: How to Live Together, presenting a series of small works (Untitled, 2002-2006), made of grosgrain and income, and installation “Playing with Clark” (2005). In 2007, he joined the Present Future exhibition at Itaú Cultural Institute, with the installation “Playing with Volpi” (2007). That same year, participated in the 30th Panorama of Brazilian Art: Contradictory, the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art (MAM-SP), with a series of 20 drawings called “Expansion”, which today makes up the MAM-SP’s collection. In 2009, he joined the Radiovisual Program – Project 4.33 ”, in the 7th Mercosul Biennial: Scream and Listen, Porto Alegre, producing audio, entitled “Tapioca” (2009).
