Miguel Rio Branco: Barro
Galeria Millan presents “Barro” the new solo exhibition by the photographer Miguel Rio Branco. On his latest show, Rio Branco presents new series of photographs, most of them taken in the indigenous tribe Gorotire, in northern Brazil, and also a movie, called “Sob as Estrelas, as Cinzas” (1992/2015).
Miguel Rio Branco was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain in 1946. He is a painter, photographer and video-artist. Branco has first shown his paintings in 1964, and his photographs and films, in 1972. He directed experimental films and worked as director of photography in New York (USA), from 1970 to 1972, and, during the following years, directed short and featured films. At the same time, he developed a work with strong poetic weight.
During recent years, he has held solo shows in France, Spain, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden and Brazil. In 2010, a pavilion dedicated to his work was built in Inhotim (Brumadinho, Brazil); he took part in the 29th Bienal de São Paulo, and held a solo exhibition at Museu da Imagem e do Som (São Paulo, Brazil). In 2012, he held the solo show “Ponto Cego”, curated by the artist himself and Paulo Herkenhoff, at Santander Cultural (Porto Alegre, Brazil). In 2014 he presented solo exhibitions at Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (São Paulo) and Casa França-Brasil (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
His work integrates private and public collections in Brazil and abroad, such as Museu de Arte Moderna (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil); MASP (São Paulo); Centre Pompidou (Paris, France); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (USA); Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam, Netherlands); Museum of Photographic Arts of San Diego (USA); and Metropolitan Museum of New York (USA).
