Rubem Valentim

The solo exhibition dedicated to Rubem Valentim reviews the career of this artist, who proved himself fundamental for Brazilian 20th century art. His work establishes links between elements of Western imaginary and the African roots of the Brazilian culture. In fact, the artist was deeply influenced by his strong connection with Afro-Brazilian syncretic religiosity; at the same time he was attracted by both the Afro-Brazilian rites and the imaginary of Christian churches, especially the Baroque saints.

As a result, his work subtly interprets the iconography and colors inherited from the Afro-Brazilian magical and religious universe, mediated by the European cultural legacy and reinterpreted in a totally original manner.
