Galeria Marcelo Guarnieri presents the individual exhibition of the artist Silvia Velludo entitled “Self-portrait with iPhone 5c”, which displays a series of paintings produced by the artist in the last 3 years.
Velludo begins the work process by shooting herself in several reflective surfaces – mirrors and glass, and from numerous images taken with the camera phone – selects some of these selfies and then translate them to a second support: painting. The painting, unlike photography, gives us another time, the slowdown of the process collides with the speed of the photographic capture. The artist becomes hostage of herself while constantly searching for her reflection. This compulsion for serial objects and actions already appeared in her previous production – “There is always a poem in each frame” – in which the artist would select small fragments of her photographs which were then reprocessed and gave rise to other thousands of images – a rural scene with a simple bench, a trash, a crowd, a bird, a mountain, a tree, a puddle of water, a difficult to identify the object. This action was an attempt to exhaust the issues present in an image and find elements that didn’t really matter at a first sight. The same happens in this new series, as the portrait gallery proposed by Velludo becomes, at some point, secondary, obtaining main importance scenes and objects that were previously only adjuncts.
