Um Passeio pelo Rio – A Cidade nas Andanças de Joaquim Manuel de Macedo
Since January 24, Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) has commenced its special programming dedicated to Rio de Janeiro’s 450th anniversary by opening the exhibition “Um passeio pelo Rio – A cidade nas andanças de Joaquim Manuel de Macedo”.
The show gathers 50 works belonging to IMS’ iconographic collection; they are drawings, watercolours and engravings that depict 19th century Rio de Janeiro. Curators Julia Kovensky and Paulo Roberto Pires departed from a series of chronicles published by Joaquim Manuel de Macedo (1820-1882) in Jornal do Commercio around 1860, the series titled “Um passeio” was later gathered and published in 1862, under the tile of “Um passeio pela cidade do Rio de Janeiro”.
The texts describes some of the city landmarks, like the Passeio Público and Square XV.
