Viva os Catadores

Photographer Martha Cooper talks about her project with waste pickers and her exhibition in São Paulo: Five-minute video shows the partnership between Martha and Pimp My Carroça for the exhibition “Viva os Catadores”

Meanwhile the exhibition “Viva os Catadores” is in São Paulo, the American photographer Martha Cooper explains in a five-minute video how she developed the partnership with Pimp My Carroça for the project. The exhibition features pictures of the artist’s expeditions registering collectors throughout Brazil and the world, along with Mundano, also an artist and creator of the movement.

In the video “I am Martha Cooper,” which has just been released on the Internet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlKCrvjXsXE), Martha speaks of this partnership and the first contacts with Mundano and the Pimp My Carroça . “With this work, I felt I was doing something responsible, which had to do not only with how we recycle materials, but with the amount of waste we produce. That changed a bit my life”, says Martha.

Martha Cooper has been a documental photographer for over 35 years and one the responsables for the appreciation of graffiti around the world. On the exhibition, visitors can see images from “catadores” registered in several countries, an installation made with a cart and a documentary about Pimp My Carroça project. The show is presented by Red Bull Amaphiko, a program which began its work with South African and Brazilian youths in 2014 and in 2015, and that selected 15 people from all over Brazil with projects that create different ways to accomplish social change.
