Chagall with Maria Lai: The inner village

Chagall with Maria Lai: The inner village brings together more than seventy works by the two artists, including paintings, etchings, artist’s books, weavings and works on paper, in a dialogue centred on memory, storytelling and imagination. Moving between Vitebsk, Chagall’s birthplace, and Ulassai, the Sardinian village where Maria Lai was born, the exhibition explores how personal histories are transformed into universal narratives. Chagall’s celebrated series inspired by Dead Souls, La Fontaine’s Fables and The Bible, together with his iconic circus imagery, reveal a poetic vision in which reality and fantasy merge. In parallel, Maria Lai’s works highlight the symbolic power of weaving, sewing and storytelling, reinterpreting traditional practices as forms of artistic and social expression. Presented across CaMuC – Casa Museo Cannas and the Stazione dell’Arte – Museo Maria Lai, the exhibition is curated by Paul Schneiter and Marco Peri.
