Minor Islands. Notes on the Photographic from 1990 to Today
Curated by Walter Guadagnini and Giangavino Pazzola
Coordinated by Elisabetta Masala
The MAN – Museum of Art of the Province of Nuoro and the Municipal Art Gallery of Cagliari present Minor Islands. Notes on the Photographic from 1990 to Today, a major group exhibition exploring the visual representation of islands in contemporary photography. Sixteen international artists reflect on insularity not only as a geographical condition but also as a cultural and social idea.
Opening on 26 June in Cagliari and 27 June in Nuoro, the exhibition features works by artists such as Mimmo Jodice, Charles Fréger, Bernard Plossu, Massimo Vitali, Giovanna Silva, Vanessa Winship and George Georgiou, among others. The projects span documentary, conceptual, and participatory approaches, questioning stereotypes, exploring identity, and addressing social change.
A prologue honours key figures who have shaped the visual narrative of Sardinia, while contemporary works focus on themes such as ritual, isolation, tourism, migration, and citizenship. The exhibition highlights a shift in how the island is viewed and portrayed, positioning Sardinia within a wider Mediterranean context.
A bilingual catalogue by Interlinea accompanies the exhibition, including curatorial texts, images of the works, and profiles of participating artists.
