Ma Liuming: Sediment of Performance

This exhibition is a chance to witness the new path Ma Liuming’s paintings is headed towards. Based on the established leakage painting method, he creates a background; he then scratches the surface with a knife to create numerous cracks and marks. The colors of multiple hidden layers underneath seep through the outermost layer, and add depth to the picture-screen. The vestiges piled on top of another seem to embrace the various layers of the artist’s life stages. The subjects for his paintings, which derive from the scenes of his past performances and the images of fire, trees, sceneries etc. that appear in those scenes embrace Ma Liuming’s artistic experiences and art historical narrative. Ma Liuming’s paintings are the visualization of the exploration of expired time and traces of the body; the picture-screen accumulates the artist’s life, philosophy, and sincere expressions. Ma Liuming was born in Hubei, China in 1969.
