Jeremy Everett: Proposal for A Defective Monument
Jeremy Everett’s first solo exhibition in Mainland China at Edouard Malingue Gallery, Shanghai, takes its tile from his new film, showcased on the occasion. “Proposal For A Defective Monument” (2018) is a four-channel video which shows the marble quarries in Carrara, Tuscany, Italy. The images surround the visitor with the white or blue-grey tones of the rocks, involved in a slow and monumental process of creation.
Beside the video, the exhibition presents a series of works through which Everett explores the act and processes of painting, such as the series of paint and light-sensitive emulsion on blanket works titled “Cushion”. Centrally-placed amidst this scene is an installation, which ultimately ties them all back to the film and exhibition title: a slab of Carrara marble, standing on a plan. Everett provides a view on the monumental and architectural treasures or on the history of painting, and references to the Land Art masters such as Robert Smithson and Michael Heizer.
