Singapore Arts Club
Arnoldii Arts Club and Gillman Barracks present Singapore Arts Club, a curated month-long elite public art showcase launching on 22nd January 2016, alongside Art After Dark celebrates Art Week. The initiative aims to increase a sense of community between the arts and the public, by encouraging interaction with artists, and for audience participation in performances and interactive sculptures.
Formerly known as “2015 Drive”, Singapore Arts Club is the 2nd annual public arts project in Gillman Barracks. Over the evening of 22nd January, visitors are able participate in various activities throughout the art district. Supporting activities such as food and beverage pop-ups, live music, an Extreme Picnicking hosted by Post-Museum, Dwellings at Gillman: Homes for Artists and Researchers by the NUS Architecture Year Two Design Studio and galleries which will be open after hours are some of the events exclusive to the night of the launch. The month of January will also see specialised lunchtime talks held by Arnoldii Arts Club, and a complimentary circulation of an art and lifestyle newsletter elaborating on the means of contemporary art in Singapore, to help bridge the burgeoning art scene with the international art world.
The multi-dimensional theme for 2016 is “Myth,” through “common myths” and the artists’ involvement in creating stories. The artworks for the project will come from three emerging Singaporeans of varying contemporary genre. This is the first time for all three Singaporean contemporary artists – Joo Choon Lin, Sean Lee, Jack Tan and Post-Museum artists to be working outdoors.
Jack Tan will explore and exaggerate Singaporean myths through a children’s lantern parade, flag installation and lantern installation, featuring eight Singaporean Youkais (mythical folkloric characters) in “Mythologies.” Sean Lee will hold a live photography session where strangers are invited to get into bed together to have their portraits taken. In addition, he will exhibit photographic work from his “Two People” and “Shauna” collection on building facades and pavements throughout Gillman Barracks. Joo Choon Lin will be staging an action-performance piece around an interactive sculpture, exploring multiple themes including the culture of shopping, the human sense of touch and the military history of Gillman Barracks in “Abdominal Bass Cavern Of A Stricken Heart”.
