Hassan Khan : Gestus
The exhibition “Gestus” is conceived as an assemblage, bringing together a diverse range of artworks across media including posters, glass objects, video, music, digital illustrations on wood, aluminium, and fabric, as well as a sculptural installation made from repurposed materials found in Cukrarna Gallery’s storage. Designed specifically for the Parter Gallery, it forms part of artist, musician, and writer Hassan Khan’s month-long residency in Ljubljana.
Developed through collaboration with a wide network of creatives—actors, musicians, designers, glass blowers, printmakers, radio editors, and technicians—the exhibition’s structure reflects Khan’s process-driven methodology. While the title and conceptual framework reference Bertolt Brecht’s theory of Gestus, Khan diverges in his approach. Brecht conceived Gestus as a critical, politically charged tool developed in response to fascism and war, intended to reveal social realities.
Khan acknowledges the political dimensions of contemporary art but applies the idea in a distinct manner, focusing on how art operates within today’s cultural and social context. “Gestus” becomes not only a reflection on form and collaboration but also a subtle interrogation of how artworks embody and express meaning in the present.
