Miró, 1983
Thanks to the generosity of Joan Miró and his wife, Pilar Juncosa, through a donation officially formalized in March 1981, today an art collection made up of almost 2,500 works can be enjoyed at the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca.
In 1956 Joan Miró took up residence on the island of Mallorca, where he would be intensely productive until his death in 1983.
The core of the collection is the large body of work donated by the artist himself, created in his four workshops in Mallorca. Most of the pieces in the collection are paintings, drawings, and prints. It also has an important document collection, and several of Miró’s sculptures can be admired in the gardens. The Foundation building was designed by the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo.
The Fundació aims to offer an interdisciplinary public service with a view to promoting knowledge, social links and participation, both at a local and international level. It is a centre for contemporary artistic creation and for reflection on subjects associated with Joan Miró’s work.
