Britta Marakatt-Labba: Where Each Stitch Breathes
“Where Each Stitch Breathes / Juohke sákkaldat vuoiŋá” presents the intricate embroidered narratives of Sámi artist Britta Marakatt-Labba. Her works reflect Sámi life, spirituality, and resistance, depicting everyday scenes alongside stories of colonial violence and environmental threat.
At the centre of the exhibition is “Historjá” (2003–2007), a 24-metre-long embroidery that traces Sámi history across time. Often compared to the Bayeux Tapestry, it weaves together myth, memory, and political struggle. The exhibition also includes graphic works, installations, and sculptures that highlight Marakatt-Labba’s deep connection to land, seasonal rhythms, and the endurance of Indigenous knowledge. Through detailed, meditative processes, she gives form to histories that are often overlooked or silenced.
