Ugo Rondinone: Cry Me a River
Despite his international career, Ugo Rondinone, who grew up in Brunnen, maintains strong connections to Central Switzerland. His work is defined by the awe-inspiring beauty of the landscape and the raw power of nature. The exhibition title Cry Me a River references a song covered by many artists, including Ella Fitzgerald and Justin Timberlake. For Rondinone, “river” evokes the River Reuss, which flows from Lake Lucerne in front of the Kunstmuseum Luzern. Rondinone’s nod to the legendary Inner-Swiss introspection and its unique material focus is deliberate. The artist presents his cultural heritage with both affection and exuberance. A prime example is his “Stonefigures”, oversized stone figures that continue the tradition of the helpful signposts found in the mountains.
In minimalist spaces, Rondinone emphasizes light, sound, and form. The visual impact of his installations is immediately grasped, and their effectiveness lies in this very simplicity.
