Bosco Sodi: Galaxia

Castello di Ama per l’Arte Contemporanea, Località Ama, 55, Gaiole in Chianti, Siena, Italy

Castello di Ama opens its doors for the inauguration of “Galaxia”, a new work by Mexican artist Bosco Sodi. On this occasion, visitors can explore the entire “Collezione Castello di Ama”, which has gathered site-specific masterpieces since 1999.

“Galaxia” is installed in the ancient cellar of Villa Pianigiani, one of the three historic villas in the Ama hamlet. This unusual space – defined by the slow rhythm of wine ageing and the hushed underground air – evokes a sense of sacredness and transformation. The installation comprises six clay spheres, each around 80 cm in diameter, with surfaces marked by cracks and scorching. At the centre sits a gold-glazed sphere, completing the work.

Sodi embraces waiting, allowing time and nature to shape his material. The clay is hand-formed into spheres and left to dry over long periods. As it dries, the material shifts unpredictably – it cracks, breaks, or may even collapse. The final work reveals both the beauty and fragility of its substance. It becomes a truthful material, marked by time’s imprint. Time here is not passive but an active agent: the artwork’s form, colour and space emerge through a dynamic process of waiting.
The title “Galaxia” suggests a cosmic arrangement, evoking planetary motion through the geo-like forms of the six spheres and the central golden one. Yet it also offers a contrast: the work is buried underground, firmly rooted in a singular, context-rich place.

Sodi’s practice reflects a sensitivity to organic matter and primordial time. Influenced by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, he welcomes unpredictability and the passage of time as aesthetic values. “Galaxia”, grounded in the Castello di Ama landscape, becomes part of an ongoing meditation on time, waiting, memory, nature and culture. The instability of form – the impossibility of a fixed shape – reflects a central idea of the collection itself, where Sodi’s work and working process find a perfect home.
