Animacies
The group exhibition Animacies explores new ways of thinking about and narrating the relationships between Europe and Asia. Through installations, painting, and photography, the participating artists critically challenge Western frameworks of thought, proposing alternative perspectives on history, community, and cultural identity.
At the heart of the exhibition is the concept of animacy, which questions the traditional distinction between the living and the non-living. Within this framework, objects and materials are understood as possessing their own forms of vitality and agency. The exhibition examines how materials such as textiles, raw resources, and artefacts can shape social structures, economic relations, and spiritual worldviews.
Particular attention is given to perspectives from regions that are often marginalised within global discourse: Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mongolia, the Philippines, and the Indo-Fijian diaspora. Rather than being viewed as peripheral, these experiences are presented as starting points for alternative forms of knowledge and cultural exchange.
