Alberto Savinio: Souvenir
Alberto Savinio. Souvenir comprises around seventy-five paintings and drawings, offering a broad and nuanced reappraisal of the artist’s pictorial practice from the 1920s to the early 1950s.
A figure who defies classification within a single discipline, Savinio moved between music, literature, theatre and the visual arts, creating a distinctive imaginative world in which classical mythology, memory, irony and invention coexist. The exhibition conveys the complexity of his artistic vision, highlighting the remarkable originality of his painting and his contribution to shaping twentieth-century visual culture.
It traces the development of his practice through some of the key themes in his work: references to the classical world and the Greece of his childhood; memory and family portraits; hybrid human-animal figures; his celebrated ‘toys’; anthropomorphic landscapes; and his graphic work, which gained increasing independence in the final years of his career.
Rather than offering a chronological survey, Souvenir reflects on Savinio’s extraordinary ability to engage with the concerns of his time while anticipating questions that remain central today: the relationship between identity and representation, dialogue between cultures, the construction of memory, and the role of imagination as a means of understanding the world.
