Aziza Kadyri: Choreography of the Latent
Aziza Kadyri. Choreography of the Latent is the first solo exhibition in an Italian institution by the Uzbek artist, who lives and works in London. Her practice brings history and fiction, tradition and technology into dialogue, combining textile-based techniques such as weaving and embroidery with artificial intelligence and machine learning. Her work addresses migration, displacement and the construction of identity, with particular attention to the experiences of Central Asian women and diaspora communities.
The exhibition presents a new cycle of works from Her Stage (2024–ongoing), a project inspired by the artist’s grandmother and her youthful ambition to become a performer of traditional Uzbek folk dance. This aspiration was hindered by the patriarchal and socialist structures of the 1950s, which confined women to domestic life and the textile industry. Drawing on this personal history, Kadyri uses machine learning, artificial intelligence and motion tracking to create an imagined choreography that combines her grandmother’s everyday gestures with movements from traditional dance.
The installation features textile sculptures inspired by traditional garments in motion, embroidered fabric thresholds evoking domestic spaces, a two-channel video and a large mirrored wall that extends the work into a virtual dimension. By combining inherited cultural practices with digital technologies, Kadyri reimagines a personal family history and explores how movement, memory and artistic expression can offer alternative ways of preserving and transmitting cultural identity.
