Cyprien Gaillard: Retinal Rivalry
OGR Torino showcases “Retinal Rivalry”, a solo exhibition by Cyprien Gaillard (Paris, 1980), curated by Samuele Piazza. Gaillard’s new video work continues his exploration of stereography, begun with “Nightlife” in 2015. Through a transgressive cinematic sensibility and animistic logic, “Retinal Rivalry” reaches new heights by presenting a world embedded with contradictions that reshape public space, transforming images into sculptures within OGR’s former industrial train maintenance hall.
The exhibition explores the optical effect of “retinal rivalry,” in which the brain alternates between conflicting images without merging them. This concept aligns with stereoscopic cinema, often dismissed as mere spectacle but here reclaimed for its sculptural and psychedelic qualities. Sergei Eisenstein once envisioned stereoscopy as the “cinema of the future” for its immersive power, drawing viewers into the film’s physical space.
