Francesco Vezzoli: C-CUT Homo Ab Homine Natus
This is the third solo show of Francesco Vezzoli with Franco Noero.
The work that gives the title to the exhibition brings to the extreme consequences the practice adopted by Vezzoli since the beginning of his sculptural production: an aesthetic of pastiche.
The C-CUT work is based on a typical 20th century cement garden sculpture, which represents a Roman soldier; on the back of this antique fake appears a bronze “cut”, an iconographic reference to Lucio Fontana’s ‘Concepts Spaziali’, from which an original marble virile head of the late Republican period emerges (about 50 BC – 37 AD).
The installation designed by Filippo Bisagni involves the entire gallery space and is conceived as a path that prepares and dismisses the viewer before and after the vision of the sculpture: the atmosphere that characterizes the completely empty rooms refer to the imagination of a certain cinema Italian horror of the ’70s, often the debtor of the mythology that binds the city of Turin to the occult; the soundtrack by Wendy Carlos exasperates a climate hovering between the horrifying element and the puerile divertissement.
