Letizia Battaglia: Works 1970-2020
Camera – Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin presents a major exhibition dedicated to Letizia Battaglia. Following previous presentations at Château de Tours, the Les Rencontres d’Arles festival and Museo Civico San Domenico in Forlì, the exhibition is curated by Walter Guadagnini and co-produced by Camera and Jeu de Paume, in collaboration with the Archivio Letizia Battaglia.
Through more than 200 photographs, the exhibition traces the life and work of the Sicilian photographer, highlighting the breadth of her artistic research and her enduring social and civic commitment. Alongside her celebrated images documenting the years marked by the Mafia in Sicily, the exhibition explores the wider range of subjects that shaped her practice. Palermo and Sicily emerge as places deeply connected to Battaglia’s identity, portrayed through their contradictions and everyday realities: the difficulties of daily life and the dignity of individuals, love and joy, the beauty of young faces, the significance of religious celebrations in local identity, and the moving scenes captured inside a psychiatric hospital.
The exhibition also explores Battaglia’s work as a photojournalist, editor and publisher. Twenty-two magazines with which she collaborated, and which in some cases she founded and directed, expand the account of her professional trajectory. A documentary film dedicated to her life further explores the personal experiences and commitment behind her work.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by Dario Cimorelli Editore. Intesa Sanpaolo is the main partner, and Radio Monte Carlo is the official radio partner.
