Michael Armitage: The Promised Land
The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo presents “The Promised Land”, Michael Armitage’s first show in Italy. The exhibition includes existing paintings alongside those produced for this show.
Armitage’s work explores contradictory dynamics in contemporary Kenya depicting scenes of daily life to local protests, from popular culture to the sociopolitical. Armitage uses processes of abstraction in order to challenge the myths and the singular narrative surrounding Africa. In his paintings, memory and firsthand experience in Kenya combine with the urgent realities depicted by the media, creating an imaginary made of violence and social unrest, but also one which clings onto hope.
