Sandplay

Providence College Galleries, 63 Eaton Street Providence

The exhibition is an ongoing collaboration between artists Mirthe Berentsen and Martín La Roche. “Sandplay” explores how personal objects shape our stories and connect us to others through memory and storytelling.

The project began during their residency at the Beautiful Distress Foundation at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn. Their work weaves personal narratives with themes of impermanence, reflecting on how we remember and describe life-defining moments.

At the heart of “Sandplay” is a participatory installation inspired by Jungian psychoanalyst Dora Kalff’s therapeutic method. A sandbox surrounded by miniatures, toys, and everyday objects invites visitors to create their own open-ended narratives, fostering curiosity and connection through storytelling.

The exhibition also includes individual works. Berentsen’s “The Right to Be Forgotten” (2021) documents the process of emptying her family home through photographs, a table sculpture with ceramic objects, and “Story Stacks”—printed stories for visitors to take. La Roche’s “Gamma Colors” (2019), a colour library created with participants at Kings County Hospital’s Behavioral Health Center, explores how we perceive and describe the world.

With materials in English, Spanish, and Dutch, the exhibition ensures multilingual accessibility, resonating with diverse audiences and cultures.
