Counterforms
A plus A Gallery presents “Counterforms”, organised by Neue Alte Brücke and Matt Williams. Bringing together works by Hannah Black, Yvo Cho, Anna Clegg, Racheal Crowther, Ufuoma Essi, Nat Faulkner, Amelia Gill, Jason Hirata, Anna Howard, Vincenzo Ottino and Nina Porter, the exhibition examines how meaning is structured through absence.
Borrowing its title from typography, where counterforms describe the spaces within and around letters that shape legibility, proportion and rhythm, the exhibition extends this principle to the encounter with artworks. Across film, photography, installation, painting and ephemera, fragmentation and mediation inform how works are produced and perceived. Images appear displaced or incomplete, objects register traces of use, removal and redaction, and sound operates as both presence and residue across layered temporal and material conditions. Systems of capture, processing and display further shape how the works take form and come into view, with intervals, discontinuities and spatial relations functioning as key organising elements.
