Antoni Clavé: Lo Spirito del Guerriero

Through the filter of the theme of the warrior, the exhibition offers the opportunity to investigate the research of the great Catalan master through the evolution of his style. It is in fact a recurring theme in his research and it appears already in 1958, firstly in his paintings, then acquiring substance and volume and thus populating also the world of sculpture. This is followed by the fortunate series of Kings that dominated the artist’s artistic imagination in the 1950s and thus continued his choice of ancient figures, the last heirs of a vanished civilization that were transformed into powerful archetypes of Spanish heritage. The paintings range from 1958 to the 90s and will include some essential works already exhibited in the 1984 Venice Biennale. The sculptures, which also include the famous “cupboards”, reveal Clavé‘s love for the most heterogeneous materials – including wood, metal, cardboard – and waste.
