David Murphy: Drift
“Drift” is the first solo exhibition dedicated in Venice to the artist David Murphy, spanning the years from 2015 to 2018 to investigate his research into abstract and natural forms. It revolves around the site-specific steel sculpture “Untitled (Climbing)” which recalls biomorphic shapes through its metallic structure. The artist conceived a complex composition of twisted and rounded parallel lines, through which the viewers experience the other paintings exhibited in the space. Along with the sculpture, a selection of recent paintings, the “Untitled” series, are on view: here Murphy uses a fast-drying paint in which he scratches graphic motives. The result are abstract drawings intentionally recalling ropes, which are particularly pertinent in Venice’s visual imagery linked with seafaring and shipbuilding.
