Ethnography of the Body and Material — Slowness and Depth in an Accelerated Society
The exhibition, “Ethnography of the Body and Material—Slowness and Depth in an Accelerated Society”, addresses the loss of physical perception and the sense of time in a world defined by rapid information and consumption. The term “ethnography” is used to describe a specific interpretive approach to artistic practice, highlighting slow creative processes that involve significant manual labour and a deep commitment to materials.
In a contemporary context prioritising efficiency and immediate results, the exhibition explores the often-neglected qualities of silence and slow pacing, which are essential for the depth of human memory and sensory experience. The participating artists present what is described as “sensory fieldwork,” operating on the margins of accelerated society. Their work utilises a diverse range of materials, including fire, water, earth, fibre, urushi (lacquer), and glass, alongside the exploration of the body. Through these mediums, the project seeks to restore a connection to the physical act of making and its cultural significance.
