Gabrielle Goliath: Elegy
Gabrielle Goliath presents an independent exhibition of her long-term performance project, “Elegy”, staged as a multi-channel video installation. The project serves as a ritual lament involving shared breath and song. For over ten years, the artist has staged “Elegy” performances globally as a call to mourn various forms of systemic violence, from rape culture and femicide in South Africa to the erasure of life-worlds in Namibia and the displacement and killing of civilians in Gaza.
In confronting loss, the work manifests a space of kinship through voice and feeling. The presentation features three new suites of performances commemorating South African student Ipeleng Christine Moholane, two murdered Nama women ancestors, and Palestinian poet Heba Abu Nada. The installation consists of eight funereal video screen monoliths that surround participants with light and sound, inviting them into a shared labour of imagination and care. This exhibition marks a significant moment as South Africa leads legal efforts at the International Court of Justice and global communities continue to protest against femicide and violence.
