Joan Jonas: Moving Off the Land II
TBA21–Academy presents a major new commission and research project by pioneering video and performance artist Joan Jonas focused on the biodiversity of the seas. The exhibition launches the first phase of Ocean Space, a new collaborative platform for cross-disciplinary research, discovery, and innovation supporting ocean stewardship and conservation, in the newly restored, historic Church of San Lorenzo. Building on the artist’s ongoing work with TBA21–Academy and curated by Stefani Hessler, Moving Off the Land II includes dozens of drawings, sculptures, video installations, and theater boxes in large scale.
A live performance by Jonas takes place as part of a series of special programs activating Ocean Space throughout the week of the Venice Art Biennale in May 2019. The installation will be on view through September 29, 2019, when Ocean Space closes for addition work to create a new flexible structure designed by Architect Andrés Jaque / Office for Political Innovation for installations, performances, workshops, archives, and research.
