Kimiko Yoshida: The Tale of Genji
For the international artisan exhibition "Homo Faber in Città" and during the 59th La Biennale di Venezia, Japanese artist Kimiko Yoshida presents a series of self-portraits realized in collaboration with artisans from Nishijin in Kyoto.
From 7th April 2022 to May 1st 2022 Palazzo Amalteo, on the occasion of the international artisan exhibition “Homo Faber in Città“, hosts the works by the Japanese artist Kimiko Yoshida. The artist presents a series of self-portraits realized in collaboration with artisans from Nishijin in Kyoto: traditional Japanese paintings mounted on a roll – “kakejiku” – made of the silk of a kimono.
The artist took her inspiration from the “lacquered image” (urushi-e) of the antique drawing from the “Tale of Genji“, an 11th-century story by Lady Murasaki-Shikibu, considered to be the world’s first psychological novel. Kimiko rethinks craftsmanship with works that are the result of the encounter of modern photography, ancient illustration and manages to create “timeless” images that seem to contain within themselves their limitlessness.
