During the 59th Venice Biennale, the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti in Venice, with the support of the Michael Werner Gallery, presents “Markus Lüpertz: Palazzo Loredan“. The exhibition features recent paintings and sculptures by the representative German artist Markus Lüpertz.

The historical setting of Palazzo Loredan facilitates Lüpertz‘s critical dialogue with painters of the past. The rich historical library and the rooms of the extraordinary Palazzo Loredan in Campo Santo Stefano in Venice offer a unique and unexpected environment to observe the works of the artist. Lüpertz evokes figures from paintings by Rubens, Poussin, David, Puvis de Chavannes, Courbet and Manet placing them in contemporary contexts.  In his recent works, Lüpertz draws on art history, exploring the biblical stories of Cain and Abel, Adam and Eve, or the iconography of Saint Sebastian, as well as the ancient myth of Dionysus. In addition to investigating traditional subjects, the artist reinterprets historical-artistic and philosophical rhetorical figures such as allegory, meditation on mortality and the idyllic utopia of Arcadia.
