Marlene Dumas: Open-End

Palazzo Grassi presents Marlene Dumas’ solo exhibition during the long-awaited Biennale Arte 2022 in Venice.

Palazzo Grassi announces “Open-end”, a solo exhibition of more than one hundred works by Marlene Dumas, including drawings and paintings from 1984 to the present, with a selection of works produced in recent years and therefore never exhibited before.

Marlene Dumas was born in Cape Town, grew up, and studied in South Africa during the years of the Apartheid regime; she currently lives in Amsterdam but the memory of those terrifying years resurfaces in all her works, which are permeated with suffering, ecstasy, fear, and despair. Dumas focuses her artistic research on the human figure and man’s reaction to emotional paradoxes. The artist expresses herself through massive use of images found in newspaper cuttings, magazines, personal photographs, and films.

The exhibition, curated by Caroline Bourgeois, includes artworks from the Pinault Collection as well as from international museums and private collections.
