Matthew Wong: Interiors
A major exhibition is dedicated to Matthew Wong at Palazzo Tiepolo Passi, presenting 35 works created between 2015 and 2019, many of which are rarely shown. Curated by John Cheim and promoted by the Matthew Wong Foundation, the exhibition examines the artist’s exploration of interior spaces, both physical and psychological, where colour operates as an emotional register.
The selected paintings trace the development of a self-taught practice that, over a short period, established a distinct visual language characterised by dense brushwork, saturated tones and suspended atmospheres. Works such as “Night Moods” (2018) and “Blue Rain” reflect recurring themes of distance, memory and solitude, articulated through visionary imagery.
The exhibition situates Wong’s work in dialogue with modernist traditions while emphasising his reinterpretation of interiority as an emotional landscape. Domestic spaces become sites of reflection, where figures, gardens and illuminated windows emerge as transient presences.
The project forms part of the Matthew Wong Foundation’s ongoing research into the artist’s work and process. Rather than a retrospective, it proposes a focused examination of his practice, supported by archival material and critical contributions, including a text by Nancy Spector, which considers these interiors as spaces to be traversed rather than inhabited.
