Matthias Schaller: Controfacciata
The exhibition presents 28 photographs, many created specifically for the occasion, exploring the architectural anomaly of the counterfacade in Venetian palaces. Known for his artistic versatility, Schaller’s work delves into Venice’s evolving identity, capturing the interplay between historical memory and potential renewal.
Schaller’s images, created through a meticulous process combining analogue and digital techniques, highlight the subtle beauty of Venetian interiors bathed in half-light, with dazzling reflections of the lagoon’s waters. His photographs transcend mere architectural documentation, transforming spaces into poetic, metaphysical compositions. Rejecting the stereotype of Venice as a ‘dying’ city, Schaller presents Venice in a phase of transition—a city suspended between its past and a future of transformation and rebirth.
