Mónica de Miranda: no longer with the memory but with its future

Through an oppositional gaze towards history, Mónica de Miranda’s video installations advance important discussions about belonging and future-making in the contemporary Anthropocene era.

Oratorio di San Ludovico, Dorsoduro 2552

Opening during the 59th Venice Biennale, the cultural association Nuova Icona presents Mónica de Miranda‘s solo exhibition in the suggestive frame of Oratorio San Ludovico.

The exhibition presents a new body of work by the artist, which revolves around the video installation “Path to the Stars”. The artwork’s title is inspired by Agostinho Neto’s homonymous poem and it was shot in Angola’s longest river, the Kwanza. The artwork analyzes the relationship between water and body through the journey of an Heroine from sunrise to sunset, confronted different narrative paths which tell stories of the past and the anti-colonial freedom fighters, the uncertainty of the present and the desire to belong. The work itself is conceptually structured as a river from which branches and layers of stories and metaphors unfold.

Through an oppositional gaze towards history, Mónica’s works advance important discussions about belonging and future-making in the contemporary Anthropocene era.
