Sacred Landscapes

A collective exhibition that represents the relationship between spirituality and nature.

Vatican Chapels, San Giorgio Island, Venice, Italy

A green and silent place in the lagoon, between water, sky and earth, ideal for leading to reflection and spiritual experience. To narrate this introspective journey, the works of ten great names in world photography have been brought together, each placed in relation to the architecture of the Vatican Chapels.

A project promoted by the Holy See and supported by the Giorgio Cini Foundation, which activates the institution’s mission to generate new creative possibilities and dialogue, a unique area of confrontation for the birth of new artistic experiences, enhancement and intercultural exchange.

Created by world-renowned architects from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Great Britain, USA, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Chile/Serbia and Paraguay, the Vatican Chapels at the Giorgio Cini Foundation represent an investigation into the places of contemporary spirituality. Made respecting the surrounding natural space, they arise in a natural environment such as the forest which becomes a metaphor for the pilgrimage of life.

The exhibition Sacred Landscapes, through the works of ten artists, invites us to reflect on the sacredness of the place and the role of man as creator and guardian.

The works by Don McCullin, Tim Davis, Marco Delogu, Graciela Iturbide, Martin Parr, Annie Ratti, Guy Tillim, Paolo Ventura, Vanessa Winship and Francesca Woodman are placed on the ground in the vicinity of the ten chapels and interact with them, although they are exposed to the action of atmospheric agents and time and thus subject to possible alteration and degradation.

The photographic works portray natural elements that become landscape through the spiritual activity of man and in the gaze of those who enter the Giorgio Cini Foundation’s woodland in this slow progression that gives meaning and value to the research.
