Sean Scully: Human

The Irish-born abstract artist Sean Scully transforms the 16th-century Benedictine church, its adjacent buildings and gardens into a visual and spiritual meditation on the human condition with recent paintings, works on paper, and sculpture – including the premiere of the 10-metre high “Opulent Ascension” which rises to the basilica ́s dome. Scully’s unique vocabulary of horizontal and vertical stripes, combined with his recent return to figuration, brings together this interplay of artistic crea- tion, architectural grandeur and sacred striving.
