Shim Moon Seup: Harnessed From Nature
The exhibition “Harnessed From Nature” presents a survey of more than five decades of artistic practice by Shim Moonseup, a leading figure in Korean contemporary art. Since the late 1960s, the artist has developed a singular sculptural language through the Korean Avant-Garde (AG) movement and the concept of “anti-sculpture.” The exhibition brings together sculpture, painting, and installation works that demonstrate a shift from anthropocentric form-making toward an eco-centric and generative mode of thought.
The title “Harnessed From Nature” does not signify domination of the environment, but refers to a condition where the latent forces and inherent order of nature operate autonomously once minimal conditions are established. In this practice, nature is an active, self-generating presence imbued with time and energy. The artist positions himself not as a maker, but as a condition setter who intervenes to reveal these processes. Materials such as earth, stone, wood, water, and light appear as ongoing states of becoming rather than finalised forms. The exhibition proposes an alternative sculptural temporality grounded in slowness and circulation, questioning how contemporary art might be rethought beyond human-centred paradigms to envision new possibilities for coexistence between nature, matter, and form.
