Le Muse Inquiete. When La Biennale di Venezia Meets History
A selection of rare archive materials retraces the key moments in Biennale's past
The exhibition “Le Muse Inquiete (The Disquieted Muses). When La Biennale di Venezia Meets History” marks the 125th anniversary of La Biennale di Venezia. For this unique occasion, all the Artistic Directors of La Biennale’s six Departments have worked together to carve the first exhibition of its kind, selecting rare source-materials from the Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts – ASAC of la Biennale and many others important Italian archives.
Cecilia Alemani (Art), Alberto Barbera (Cinema), Marie Chouinard (Dance), Ivan Fedele (Music), Antonio Latella (Theatre) and Hashim Sarkis (Architecture) have worked to retrace all the moments in the Biennale’s past which overlapped with main historical events.
The exhibition takes place in the Central Pavilion at Giardini della Biennale, investigating key historical moments from Fascism to the Cold War, from the unrest of ’68 to the first Architecture Biennale, until the 1990s and the beginning of globalization. Over the years until the most recent developments, the Biennale bears witness to the many shifts and crisis which have characterised the late nineteenth century to the present.
