The Invisible Chord. Hans Hartung and Music
Fondazione Querini Stampalia and the Hartung-Bergman Foundation, in collaboration with Perrotin, present “The Invisible Chord. Hans Hartung and Music”, curated by Thomas Schlesser. Bringing together nearly eighty paintings, documents and working tools, the exhibition examines the central role of sound in Hans Hartung’s artistic and personal universe.
The exhibition considers the presence of music across Hartung’s practice, from Baroque composers such as Bach, Handel and Vivaldi to figures including Lili Boulanger, Pierre Boulez and Philip Glass. A dancer and pianist in his youth, Hartung maintained an intense relationship with music throughout his life, and his paintings are approached here through rhythms, harmonies and gestures that resonate across his work. Combining paintings with documents and working materials, the exhibition traces the connections between sound, movement and mark-making in his visual language.
